Randomized clinical trials have dominated the top of the research evidence pyramid for years. However, in June 2024, JAMA issued a statement endorsing causal inference from observational studies. In this talk, we will 1) review foundational assumptions in causal inference; 2) discuss common pitfalls of analyses of observational data; and 3) review recent advances in causal inference – namely the development of the “target trial” framework – that can provide more confidence in results from these studies.
