Type 20 – the Restoration TARDIS
This is the first TT capsule to have an architectural configuration program. The immense open-plan spaces of the earlier interiors were created to showcase the technology of dimensional transcendence. The Type 20 came about when it was decided that smaller and similar distinct spaces, in particular, the control room were more practical and comfortable. This combined with the desire to configure and personalise these without the need for custom builds led to the development of the architectural configuration program. Early versions of this program were temperamental, complex, and required a great deal of power, as such changes were usually slight. Also at the time of development, extended trips in TT capsules were becoming more common. When traveling into the "black seas of infinity" the Timelords increasingly wanted to take 'home' with them. As such the interiors were stripped back. The default configuration was a simple whitewashed stone interior which reflected the core concepts of architecture whilst still reflecting the grandeur of Time-Lord society. This design was a fashion for a while and high ceilings became a trend (see the Type 25). This was superseded by the desire for a minimalist grey/white look of the later TT capsules which started with the Type 36 and lasted through to the Type 57.
