Reservoir Dogs swears faster than any other Tarantino film. So why doesn't it win?
This is a fun side data project: an animated bar chart race tracking cumulative curse-word count through 7 Tarantino films — Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, both Kill Bill volumes, Inglourious Basterds, and Django Unchained — using real, per-word timestamped data, not estimated.
The twist: the race isn't run on clock minutes, since these films range from 99 to 165 minutes long. Instead it's raced on percentage of each film's own runtime, so every film runs the full width and nobody finishes early. Reservoir Dogs is by far the densest of the seven — 4.25 curse words a minute against Pulp Fiction's 3.05 — and leads almost the entire race on pure pace. Pulp Fiction only takes the lead inside the final 10%.
The lead changes hands 12 times between three films across the whole race. Note: only 7 Tarantino films are in this dataset — Death Proof, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood aren't included.
Data source(s):
The FiveThirtyEight Tarantino dataset, real per-word timestamped profanity data across 7 films.
