In the early 2000s, a Dutch teacher leaves the quiet life of a small village for Colombia, searching for purpose in a country torn apart by inequality, violence, and civil war. What begins as curiosity becomes conviction when Tanja Nijmeijer joins the FARC, one of Latin America’s most controversial guerrilla movements.
Through intimate diaries, rare archival footage, and voices from both sides of the conflict, Tanja Up in Arms follows her transformation from idealistic outsider to armed revolutionary, public enemy, peace negotiator, and woman forced to confront the cost of her choices. Branded a terrorist by some and a symbol of resistance by others, Tanja’s story exposes the blurred lines between belief, violence, loyalty, and regret.
Set against decades of Colombian war, kidnappings, state violence, paramilitary brutality, and the long road to peace, this film is not only the portrait of one woman, but a haunting look at how revolutions seduce, consume, and leave behind questions that peace alone cannot answer.
