Tamara Lunger is never shy of breaking records. At 23, she was the youngest woman ever to scale and summit the 8000 metre high Lhotse. A few years later she climbed K2, the worlds 2nd highest mountain without the aid of bottled oxygen. A feat many considered impossible. She is woman, in her own words that is, “used to doing all her best to achieve her goals.” If she sets out to complete something, she completes it. Nothing stands in her way.
In 2016, she was 70m from the top of Nanga Parbat and 70m from becoming the first woman to summit during the winter of this 8 thousander. With only a bit further to go and with the inner determination Tamara Lunger possesses, there was surely no way she would give in before completing her goal...
However.... Even though a record lay only 70m away, Tamara turned back. A decision which was incredible hard to make. True inner strength, is knowing when to let a goal go, to give up for today, so that there is a chance of success tomorrow. There was a high chance, that carrying on would mean death in the conditions, so in the end, even though it took strong will, turning around was the right choice. Even on the way down Tamara Lunger was tested almost to breaking. Slipping in the conditions, she plummeted 200m down the mountain side, severely injuring herself but surviving to fight another day.
Tested to the limit at Nanga Parbat, made Tamara stronger. She learnt a lot about herself and how not making it, is just a step towards making it. Although badly injured by the attempt and needing many months of recovery, 2 years later, Tamara Lunger returned to summit Gora Pobeda during the winter in -50C temperatures and violent winds.
Tested to almost breaking, Tamara had returned to overcome the odds.
