As part of our 'Talking helps' Conversation series we spoke to Dominik about his experience as a carer for his wife who has an eating disorder.
Dominik talks candidly about the life of a carer. How carers need support at the same time as the person they're caring for. He tells us how his wife had to stop work so that he would be the only breadwinner and about the total isolation he experienced because he was always completely hands-on with this illness that he didn't have the time or energy to meet with friends or reach out for help.
If you're a carer looking after someone with an eating disorder this will be a really helpful video to watch. He gives some words of assistance and strongly believes that as soon as you find out about the illness it's really helpful to connect with other people that are in the same situation; going to care support groups and reaching out to the experts at The Butterfly Foundation helpline makes a big difference.
For Dominik it allowed him to bounce off ideas about problems, or solutions to problems. It also helped because he got to not focus on himself a little bit and be able to help other people. It lifted the weight off his shoulders and helped no end.
Dominik's relationship with his wife has completely changed. He can actually find her now rather than the eating disorder that he was married to for a while. It takes time but Dominik believes that it is possible for it to completely go away.
Anyone of any age, gender, culture or background can experience eating or body image concerns. Watch our full video series to see that there are as many different eating disorders as the people who experience them.
You'll see that eating or body image concerns can have a serious impact on your life. However, you're not alone, and you don't need to do it all by yourself.
That's why our confidential, free and expert support team are here from 8am to midnight AET, seven days a week, ready to talk. Because talking can help.
