Today is the great festival of Janmashtami, and to celebrate the birthday of any great person, we should do the work of awakening Dhamma within us, to ensure the festival is not completed only with an external ceremony. In fact, the teachings of that great man should be inculcated in our lives, his ideas should be lived by.
After all, some consider Shri Krishna as God, and considering him as God, pray, 'O Lord, the giver of joy, give us the knowledge, take away all the bad qualities from us, taking refuge in you we shall become virtuous.' His is very beautiful preaching, but feeling that He should do something for us, even if we have a thousand demerits, you set us free, this is wrong.
Krishna says, 'I love a devotee whose expectations have gone away, cravings have gone away. He has become pure, his heart has become pure.'
So celebrations are not only for dancing and singing but to live with great understanding. May Dhamma come into our life in its true sense, only then the significance of Janmashtami is understood.
