Image Processing for Light Microscopy
Speaker: Jérôme Boulanger, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, UK

The LMB Light Microscopy Facility supports a diverse range of light microscopy imaging techniques within the LMB including single molecule fluorescence applications, high content screening, confocal microscopy, and intravital imaging using multiphoton excitation. In addition to commercial systems, the facility is building new instruments such as a light sheet microscope. The facility is primarily intended for hands-on research by students, postdocs, and group leaders, who prepare specimens, and operate the microscopes. Light Microscopy supports users in advice, training, assistance in imaging processing, and through the development of custom analysis software tailored to a specific application.

This video gives an overview of why we need to process the image and what the workflow process is using software. It covers topics such as filtering, sources of noise, de-noising, image deconvolution, image segmentation, object tracking, and co-localisation.

The Light Microscopy Facility is headed by Nick Barry, an optical physicist and specialist in light microscopy.

About the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB):
The LMB is one of the world's leading research institutes. Discoveries and inventions developed at the LMB, for example DNA sequencing and methods to determine the structure of proteins, have revolutionised all areas of biology. Its scientists work to advance understanding of biological processes at the molecular level. This information will help us to understand the workings of complex systems, such as the immune system and the brain, and solve key problems in human health.
