Talia Goddess knows that taste is eternal. It’s something you’re born with, but also something you finesse. Brought up in Brooklyn, part of a huge Black Caribbean family (she’s got nine siblings), Talia was raised around barbecues, house parties, and makeshift sound systems. Uncovering the secrets of production, she was broadly self-taught - “YouTube university, for sure! I’m a fast learner” – before winning a scholarship to the prestigious LaGuardia High School. “It was such a culture shock,” she gasps. “Going from a Black Caribbean community to meet white, Asian, Latin people, all with their own skills. It helped me define myself in a much wider context.”

Blossoming, she took this inspiration and reinforced her DIY goals. Following the release of her debut EP she began to spend more time in London – short spells at first, before making the trans-Atlantic switch. There’s something about the eclecticism of the nightlife, the multi-faceted culture that feels welcoming. “I really like the DJ culture here,” she says. “It works as a stepping stone towards creative communities more generally. I feel like the attention to detail, and the ethos, is really potent here. There’s so much to engage with, especially for Black queer youth.”

With her second EP incoming, it’s clear that Talia Goddess is here to stay. An emphatic talent who matches complexity to immediacy, her DIY roots are mirrored by her colossal ambitions. “At the end of the day it all comes down to the music, and being able to move people,” she says. “Never stay in a box and keep things unpredictable.”
