Studio space isn’t something every photographer has easy access to. But nonetheless, EVERY photographer can still take studio-style photos, and all they need is a little outside space.
In this video, photographer Gavin Hoey takes his studio setup into his garden. Why? Well, as Gavin shows, the extra space he gets outside is one reason, and the freedom to experiment with ideas that are less than studio-friendly is another.
Gavin starts out with studio photography basics, like removing as much of the ambient light from his exposure as possible. To achieve a shallow depth-of-field look, Gavin combines flash with a 4-stop ND filter for his first look.
The second setup needs an increased depth of field, so Gavin works without the ND filter and adds something he would avoid doing in the studio… sprayed water.
With the addition of a warm-toned backlight and an assistant to control the water spray, this studio session on location is one not to miss!
