Crews have excavated 51 feet of the planned 74.5-foot-deep, 45-foot-diameter drop shaft. The site, located along the Potomac River near Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, will include a diversion facility designed to capture sewer overflows and direct them to the tunnel.
Once complete, the Potomac River Tunnel will prevent nearly a billion gallons of combined sewage and stormwater from entering the Potomac River in an average year. The project is expected to reduce overflow volume by up to 93% and cut overflow events from 74 to just four annually.
