If a damage source touches you on the frame you enter a tag barrel, you will take damage and gain control. The ability to move around with the tag barrel menu leads to a variety of other tricks.
Basically, if you press A, B, or Z when a kong is highlighted, you will switch to that kong and get rid of the stored menu. You can safely perform any action involving those buttons when the menu is scrolling to the right or left, or after leaving the range of the tag barrel.
To make the surroundings visible, play your instrument. Pausing and unpausing will reactivate the tag barrel void. If you use a warp pad in the black void, objects around you will become visible.
The camera is fixed until you press C-up. You can use this to keep the menu up while going to places that are normally out of the tag barrel range.
To use a warp pad near the stored tag barrel, press right or left, quickly followed by Z. This also applies if you warp back to the tag barrel. If you don't press Z soon enough, you will turn invisible and undo the storage. Alternatively, you can go into C-up mode on the warp pad, start holding Z while scrolling through the tag barrel, and exit C-up mode while still holding Z.
