Wet Stone Flattening

Prairie Edge Service 2024-06-18 | Wet stone flattening with Nano Hone Lapping plate NL-6 I like the NL-6 because it is the finest grit of the three lapping stones offered by Nano-Hone. As a result it is the least aggressive and it leaves a nice restored finish to my fine wet stones like my 2000 grit Naniwa through the flattening process. As a final step I finish the wet stone surface using the King Nagura stone #8000 to achieve the true wet stone working grit surface.

Final Build converting 120V single phase bench grinder to variable speed belt grinder using a VFD

Prairie Edge Service 2023-02-07 | This is a continuation of the previous video exploring the possibility of using a VFD with 120V single phase input power and producing 120V 3 phase output to drive a permanent split capacitor (PSC) AC induction motor 1750 RPM in my grinder. This is my final build configuration in converting the grinder to use a 2x36 belt grinder attachment offered my multitool. The VFD is programmed to drive the motor winding direct from the VFC. The start/run capacitor is totally removed. The VFD controls both Frequency and Voltage to drive the motor with variable speed from 200RPM to 3000 RPM.

Connecting a 120V VFD to single phase PSC motor in my bench grinder

IMPORTANT NOTE: To make this work I needed to select the correct VFD for this type of operation. The VFD has to have an input of 110V and output of 110V. Please be aware there are many VFD's with different input and output phase and voltage configurations.

My test motor is King Canada KC-895LS 8" Low Speed Bench Grinder 120V, 3A, 1750RPM

Note this will not work with an AC motor that has a centrifugal clutch that disconnect the start capacitor once the motor starts up. Those motors have secondary starting windings that are thinner gage and are not designed for continuous operation.

DIY Diamond Spray solution for strops.

3 oz distilled water
2 oz of humidor solution (50/50 water /propylene glycol)
25 CW = 5 grams monocrystalline diamond powder.

With this solution I still get settling but not as fast as straight water.

20240712 update
I use my diamond spray solution on 1x42 leather belt and a flathone scissor honing pad. When using the solution on the flathone for hair shears on a felt pad, the scissors would get hot enough that the propylene glycol would crystalize and form a hard shell on the metal. My last batch I have changed my recipe to the following:

2.5 oz distilled water
2.5 oz of Di-Propylene Glycol
3-5 cc of Camellia oil
25 CW = 5 grams monocrystalline diamond powder.

So far this is working extremely well. I notice the solution is keeping the diamond powder in suspension much, much better. It spays out on my work surface as almost a sort of light thin foamy appearance. Maybe I should have use 3oz water to 2 part Di-Dropylene Glycol. But it is definitely better than using the propylene glycol product.
