[MKWii] Mushroom Gorge World Record - 43 815 by SW★DARK★ゼロ
updated
The audio was recorded in Recon mode so it has some background noise.
The solid ghost replay code was created by MK8DXLive: twitter.com/MK8DXLive (TID: 1346404686241300481) / youtube.com/channel/UCFboJTeg9Eqjy92NVh2-7bw/videos (Discord: MK8DXLive@2863)
This video shows 4 different ways of recording replays in Mario Kart 8 (Wii U).
______________________________
--- Top left = GHOST
The regular in-game replay. The character/vehicle is transparent. Picked-up coins remain on the track. The track doesn't interact with the racer (e.g. Electrodrome stairs do not light up when driven over, traffic cones don't move when hit…)
______________________________
--- Top right = MKTV
The "Mario Kart TV" highlight reel. Has a MKTV watermark in the upper right corner. Can be rewinded/fast-forwarded. No motion blur when using a mushroom / dash panel.
Only plays the lap 1 regular music continuously (even on final lap/section), but music can be disabled so that only sound effects play (e.g. youtu.be/NWQmas-TA5o ). Does not have a mushroom box, timer, coin counter, Lakitu. Lap count only appears when crossing the line. Track objects interact with the racer.
It was possible to share the MKTV replay by uploading it along a Miiverse post (details: youtu.be/8YpV1DDG62A ) but Miiverse was shut down by Nintendo in November 2017. Nowadays, only the player who made the run can watch his own MKTV replay (unless he hacks his Wii U console and manually retrieves the MKTV replay file, or uses Cemu emulator).
______________________________
--- Bottom left = SOLID GHOST
Same as ghost, except the character/vehicle is now opaque and casts a shadow.
This is the newest method, made possible thanks to MK8DXLive's code.
MK8DXLive does not wish to post the code publicly (a bit like mdmwii during Mario Kart Wii days), please contact him directly for inquiries.
I call it a "solid ghost replay" because it's technically not like the Live Replay code from Mario Kart Wii where the game plays back the button inputs stored in the ghost file. Here in MK8, the code only affects the appearance of the racer. It's still considered as a ghost: coins do not disappear when picked up, and the track does not react to the racer.
______________________________
--- Bottom right = COMBINED
The main type of video editing that was used on MK8Records between ~October 2014 (first use: youtu.be/hl3CVScNkww ) and October 2017. Players would upload their world record ghost to Nintendo Network, but also their MKTV highlight reel along a Miiverse post so that I could retrieve both types of replays and combine them to take advantage of their features. Explanation of how "combined replays" were made: https://i.imgur.com/AGUkHF8.png
As far as I remember, the basic idea of combined replays came from Japanese player tossy ( youtu.be/wv1feJ0oRlw ).
Download the original file (200 MB): mediafire.com/file/zciqmmsvlfrtn3i/libaom-av1_crf34_mk8-rRRd-1-16-364_GusNyquist.mkv/file
When searching about AV1 and YouTube on the Internet, many results talk about how YouTube transcodes existing videos to AV1 for display. However I couldn't find easily whether YouTube accepts AV1-encoded video UPLOADS so I tried to upload an AV1-encoded video and it works.
Google's help page "Supported YouTube file formats" does list HEVC (h265) but not AV1 at the moment: support.google.com/youtube/troubleshooter/2888402?hl=en
This video is *NOT* in AV1 when watched on YouTube. It is best viewed in 1440p resolution as YouTube transcodes to this resolution with VP9 codec while lower resolutions get h264/AVC. Or just download the original file but it may not play smoothly on VLC with lower-end devices.
--- The original video was encoded with:
ffmpeg version 4.3.2-2021-02-27-full_build-www.gyan.dev
ffmpeg.org/download.html
libaom-av1 2.0.2-1328-gc458ab0b5
-c:v libaom-av1 -cpu-used 4 -crf 34 -b:v 0 -lag-in-frames 35 -c:a libopus -b:a 192K
The single-pass software encoding took about 4h10 on an Intel Core i9-10900k CPU (5166 frames, fps=0.3, bitrate=19486.3kbits/s)
--- The Mario Kart 8 ghost replay was recorded on the Wii U emulator Cemu 1.22.8, with Vulkan + Graphics pack enabled (TV Resolution 5120x2880 then Bilinear downscaled to 2560x1440 in Cemu)
This is the current 1:16.364 world record run on N64 Rainbow Road by Sgt. Guy: youtube.com/watch?v=bMAQxmaFF4Y
At 0:58 the fireworks suddenly change because I could not get Cemu emulator to not drop frames so the final video is a combination of two recordings and changes between the two to discard segments with dropped frames. Also, despite the Cemu wiki saying "Compatibility: Perfect" for this game ( wiki.cemu.info/wiki/Mario_Kart_8 ), Mii faces are not rendered correctly.
GPU RTX 2070 Super obviously isn't powerful enough to render the game at 1440p60 + record with OBS using Display Capture + encode with NVENC (even with DLSS 1.0 on and Volume Rendering OFF).
While the game is smooth, frames are dropped on the stream.
35 Mbps CBR
At 2:42:45 a short part of the live broadcast was cut because of a network issue. For some reason the primary YouTube ingest server stopped receiving data so I switched to the backup ingest server which had no problem taking 24 Mbps in.

This version contains drums and flutes in addition to the regular theme and choir.
To my knowledge, nobody bothered uploading this specific version to YouTube with good quality.
I did not rip this sequenced music, it comes from slippyToad's topic on the Final Fantasy Shrine forum.
• juanacate recorded the song but it has in-game sound effects:
→ youtube.com/watch?v=XGdMJAD72EY
"King Bowser (Spinning Around) | Super Mario Galaxy | Soundtrack"
• chipmunkmusic999 seemingly posted an older version of slippyToad's rip which was desynchronized:
→ youtube.com/watch?v=Hpmd_OdhfX0
"SMG OST- King Bowser ~ Rolling [115]"
The most commonly uploaded version on the Internet only contains the regular theme and choir - ironically, such a version is never played in the game. There's always on top of it either extra drums (burned tail) or extra drums and flutes (spinning).
→ youtube.com/watch?v=NLUnBT8RegI (BrawlBRSTMs3 X)
"King Bowser - Full - Super Mario Galaxy Music Extended"
While Bowser is running around with its tail burning, the extra drums are playing, but not the flutes. I couldn't find any proper "Burned Tail" rip; slippyToad's file is desynchronized and he never fixed it, unlike the "Bowser Rolling" file which was fixed in 2011.
If you don't understand the differences between all the variations, see this video where I intentionally let Bowser run around with its burning tail, and spin, for a long time:

"MKWii 6 Mbps bitrate test (Intel QuickSync Ivy Bridge)"
Compared with part #02, I changed the stream video encoder from x264 to Intel Quick Sync.
---
On the Internet, Intel's hardware encoding solution "QuickSync" is often said to have lower quality than x264 (software encoding) and NVENC (Nvidia graphics card hardward encoding) especially at low bitrates.
This is an old PC built in 2013. QuickSync tremendously helps relieving stress from the CPU compared with x264; OBS uses 5-10% CPU while recording.

Troll translator takes us for a rollercoaster ride of emotions. (Nintendo Switch Presentation)
The cheater apparently modified the track file so that it's only 1 lap long on his console. See discussion at http://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-u-hacking-homebrew-discussion.367489/page-487
Blatant hacked runs will obviously not count on mkwrs / MK8Records / etc.

0:45 Find Recent and Favourited MKTV replays in Mario Kart TV mode
1:36 Retrieve other players' MKTV replays using Miiverse
Ghost replays = shroombox + coin/lap count + timer
• MKTV replays display a ribbon at the bottom of the screen ( http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2014/39/1411763410-mktv-time-trials-bottom-ribbon.jpg ) during the first few seconds of a run so the ghost replay is used instead at the beginning.
I used tossyMK's idea of fading the ghost into the solid character as soon as the MKTV ribbon disappears ( youtube.com/watch?v=wv1feJ0oRlw&t=18s ).
• Due to the randomly generated elements ( see video http://youtu.be/CF6fANfMkFA ), the separation lines between the MKTV & ghost replays may be visible sometimes. This is the 1280×720 mask I used: http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2014/39/1411851645-mktv-replay-mask.png
Since the Lakitu doesn't appear on MKTV replays, he is visible only during the countdown, where the ghost replay is used.
• MKTV replays do not play Lakitu lap 1→2 transition jingle nor the final lap jingle so you'll have to add them manually. I could only rip the final lap without other sound effects; I can't find a way to rip lap 1→2 transition jingle alone.
Ghost is from French player HD ◆ DDSC 2:00.752 on Bowser's Castle. He used HD★Dεmøη♪'s Mii nickname at the time as a joke because they were both in the worldwide Top 10.
Music is regular Bowser Battle theme from Super Mario Galaxy (regular, burned tail & rolling variations).
- Timer (especially milliseconds/hundredths of second)
- Most particle effects (Bowser's Castle yellow/orange floating particles, similar to Mount Wario's snow or Cloudtop Cruise's thundercloud particles), drift sparks…
- Most smoke effects (tire drifts, heat haze…)
- Most fire effects (firebars, torches, the vehicle's exhaust pipe… even the “MARIOKART” logo's burning fire texture on the finish line)
- Wind lines (when under the effect of a boost, and the glider's wind lines)
- Most lighting effects (tricking, picking up a coin, lasers from the small Bowser heads…) – but, surprisingly, not the anti-gravity tire transformation effect it seems!?
- Lava texture seems to flow randomly
- Hammer Bros. jump with no fixed pattern
- The airship visible in the turn after the wrecking ball moves up/down randomly
- Flags wave randomly
- Lava geysers
That may seem like a lot of elements, but keep in mind the majority of the comparison video remains gray, which means all the rest is rendered exactly the same during each replay.

The audio sounds weird during the final lap. It seems the game did not load the final lap music at the exact same time in the two recordings.
MK8 speedrun leaderboards: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kEXBZeoJX1qoBJiEUpbYXk23aHlfc9-LB7Hic_yGNyo/edit#gid=1829389165
The loading times that you experience may not be exactly the same ones as those seen on the video, depending on the circumstances. For example, some tracks load faster than others. Also, if you launch the game right after you powered on the console & the Wii U main menu appeared, it will take longer.
Some observations for people who want to do audio editing:
- It is not possible (as far as I am aware) to rip the Lakitu new lap jingle from the game without sound effects/music. I could have used MKWii's one but it sounds quite different. So, it's a bit weird to put the final lap jingle but not the lap 2 entrance jingle. On the other hand, it doesn't cover the music.
- Impossible to rip the whistling that plays when the finish line is crossed, but I used MKWii's one as it is similar.
- Impossible to rip the “race intro” jingle that plays at the very beginning of the race, when the camera turns around the vehicle, but it's not really needed as this part is cut (the video starts right before the countdown, and the course intro jingle is played before that moment).
Ending the menu music abruptly when the race part stars didn't sound good, since there was no sound at all, so I made it last a bit longer and fade out before the countdown.
