I Tried Gold Leaf on the Gel Plate—Here’s What Happened FroyleArt 2025-07-12 | Today I’m in the studio experimenting with something new—using gold leaf on the gel plate to create rich, luminous textures in my prints. I’ve always loved the glow and elegance of gold leaf, and I wanted to see how it could work alongside the unpredictable beauty of Gelli printing.The truth is, my first few experiments didn’t go as planned. The gold leaf didn’t behave the way I expected, and the results were far from perfect. But that’s part of the creative process—sometimes things don’t work out, and you have to keep going, keep playing, and keep learning.As I continued to experiment, I discovered some useful tips and ideas for making gold leaf work with gel printing. FroyleArt 2025-08-16 | I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect home laser printer to use in my gelli print image transfers, and today I’m putting the Brother Colour Laser Printer to the test.My friend Libby kindly sent me some of her prints from this machine, but her results were a bit hit and miss—so I decided to buy one myself and see what it could really do. After a rocky start (and a few unexpected surprises), I managed to get beautiful, successful image transfers working on the gel plate.This opens up so many exciting possibilities for my mixed media art, and I can’t wait to explore them further. Miniature Collage Art Made Fast and Easy FroyleArt 2025-07-05 | Today I’m creating a series of miniature collage artworks—a simple and satisfying process that turns gel prints into small, layered pieces ready for framing, gifting, or building into larger collages later on.I start with my large 16 x 20" gel plate and lay down one of my Journey Home stencils with a layer of rich bronze paint. After pulling the first print, I take the ghost print and add a fresh layer of colour before placing down small squares of watercolour paper. With one pull, I’m left with 14 beautiful miniature prints, each with a soft bronze background and natural texture.From there, I begin playing—some of the miniatures get an extra layer of stencil detail using stencil butter, while others are transformed into collage compositions using pieces from my scrap bags: fragments of gel prints, handmade Kozo papers, and little treasures saved from past projects.The results are so versatile: you can use these mini artworks as gifts, cards, keepsakes, or even as focal points for larger mixed media pieces down the track. Collaging Directly on the Gel Plate? You’ve Got to Try This! FroyleArt 2025-06-07 | In today’s video, I’m pulling out some of my beautiful dissolved National Geographic pages and creating a full collage directly on the gel plate. This is one of my favourite experimental processes—it’s spontaneous, textured, and full of unexpected beauty. I start with a bold foundation using my newly released large 'Dance Moves' stencils, spraying through them with antique gold acrylic spray to create that rich, metallic detail on the plate. Then I layer in smaller handmade papers along with the dramatic, dreamy textures of the Nat Geo pages, building a surface that’s full of movement and depth.Once the collage layers are in place, I seal everything with a coat of gloss gel medium and pull the print using wet strength tissue—capturing all those elements in one single, satisfying pull. And of course, I couldn’t stop at just one. I Almost Threw This Painting Away… Then This Happened FroyleArt 2025-05-31 | Ever started a painting with a clear plan… and then everything changed? That’s exactly what happened to me today. I set out to add a layer of paint to this collage piece, hoping to let some of the background papers peek through with the help of clear medium. But the paint wasn’t as transparent as I expected—and things didn’t go to plan.I felt stuck, uncertain, and honestly… I almost threw the painting in the trash.But I didn’t. I kept going.Layer by layer, I worked through the challenges, made bold decisions, and slowly brought the piece to life. The final touch?
