The Sysendammen is a significant rock-fill embankment dam located in the municipality of Eidfjord in Hordaland, Norway. It’s one of the largest dams in Norway, situated at the end of the Sysendalen valley.

The dam regulates the water supply to Vøringsfossen. During the summer season, a minimum water flow is required, and this water is also used for power generation at the Leiro power plant located below the Sysendammen.

The dam represents large facilities in the high mountains and advanced energy development from the 1970s. It impresses with its size and location. There’s a parking lot and an information board at the dam.

The dam is 81 meters high, 1,160 meters long, and 248 meters wide at its base. It’s constructed of 3.6 million cubic meters of stone and moraine deposits. Inside the dam, there’s a mud core that serves as a seal.

The Sysendammen dam was built over a span of 6 years and was completed in 1980. It dams up the Sysenvatnet lake, which is the main reservoir of Sy-Sima.
