Antique Cookbook/All Recipes Over 100 Years Old
This recipe book was hidden with a few other little cookbooks at a thrift store and of course, I had to buy it. It is one of the most interesting that I have come across. Some of the recipes seem to have come straight out of Grannies Kitchen on Beverly Hillbillies. The recipe that is below is exactly how it is written in the book. And it did turn out very tasty. I hope that you get a chance to try it and I would love to hear if you do.
Syrup Bread
Sift together 2 cups flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt,
1/4 teaspoon soda, 2 teaspoons ginger, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Add 1/3 cup melted butter, 1 cup homemade syrup or molasses, 3/4 cup buttermilk, and 2 eggs. Mix well, pour into a loaf pan, and bake in a moderate oven for about one hour.
My simple syrup recipe:
1 cup sugar to 1 cup of water and cook until sugar is melted and it is a little thick.
I added 1 cinnamon stick and some orange peel to it also.
The molasses would give it a richer taste than the simple syrup. It is a dense bread and would be great for breakfast with butter.
