The following is a 95-minute recording I took of Syrian state television in the aftermath of the collapse of the Ba'athist regime under Bashar al-Assad. For context, the Syrian Civil War had been relatively quiet for some time, but that changed drastically. On November 27, 2024, a coalition of Syrian opposition groups, led by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) under the Military Operations Command and supported by allied Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) factions, launched a major offensive against the pro-government Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in Idlib, Aleppo, and Hama Governorates.
Simultaneously, southern rebel factions that had previously reconciled with the regime reignited their resistance, capturing Daraa and Suwayda. Meanwhile, the Syrian Free Army and Syrian Democratic Forces initiated separate offensives in Palmyra and Deir ez-Zor, respectively. By December 8, Damascus fell to rebel forces. The Ba'athist regime subsequently collapsed, with reports indicating that Bashar al-Assad fled to an undisclosed location. There are reports of a Syrian Air flight, allegedly carrying Assad, that went off radar—potentially crashing or being shot down. If this is true, Assad is dead.
