In part 3 of our Synth Dictionary series, we'll be teaching you about filters. Filters change the tone of your sound and shape its brightness by removing certain frequencies. While the oscillator creates the foundation of your track, the filter plays a key role in helping to refine its timbre. On most synths, there are three main types of filters: low pass, high pass, and band pass. Applying a low pass filter to your sound removes higher frequencies, which can reduce harshness and make your sound more mellow; applying a high pass filter removes lower frequencies, which can make your sound brighter and less muddy; and applying a band pass filter cuts both the high and lows so you can achieve a specific frequency range on your sound.

On SK2 and After Dark, the filter frequency is controlled via the righthand lever. Holding down the "Filter Mod Type" button (found below the filter lever) allows you to choose between filter types - low pass, high pass, and band pass - while moving the lever up and down controls the sound frequency where the filter is applied.
