In this lesson we'll discuss the challenges and methods of starting synchronous motors including ramping up excitation frequency using motor drives, amortiser or damper windings, and pony motors. Additionally we'll explore some of the coordination and protection mechanisms inside a DC exciter circuit and examine the operation of components like the field discharge resistor, the field contactor and field discharge switch, the polarized field frequency relay (PFFR), out of step relay (OSR), and loss of excitation relay (LOE). (Full Lecture)
0:00 Introduction
4:00 Amortisseur timer/RSS implementation
8:40 Pony motor
10:00 DC exciters
14:00 Field discharge resistor and field discharge switch
16:50 Out of step relay OSR
19:30 Polarized field frequency relay PFFR
26:20 Loss of excitation relay LOE
