Diamond in the Rough is a 1974 soul album by Chicago singer Syl Johnson, recorded in Memphis for Hi Records under the production of Willie Mitchell. Cut during the same sessions that defined Hi's signature sound, it finds Johnson working alongside the Hi house band at the peak of their powers, warm, unhurried, and deeply groove-oriented. Though Johnson was always somewhat in Al Green's shadow at the label, the records he made there were among the strongest of his career.
