In a world of soulless, design by committee safe bet games, financed by publishers who don’t understand their audience, let’s take a step back in time and look at what happens when artists are just allowed to create beautiful art. Benoit Sokal may not be the heavy hitter that people like Hideo Kojima or Swen Vincke are, but this Belgian comic artist turned game director created one of the most well loved cult classics of the entire point and click adventure genre.
Syberia is a beautiful journey through a dream-like world told through some of the most wonderful writing and art that you’ll find in games. It may have been made in a time of more limited technology and simpler mechanics but the passion and creative vision that created these shines through even today.
Come with me as I explore both Syberia one and two in this long form retrospective video essay and we explore the development, story and characters of this beautiful world. Let’s take a journey on a whimsical clock work train, controlled by a seemingly living automaton and join Hans Voralberg and Kate Walker on their adventure across the frozen north of the Russian continent as they go on a wild journey through a strange and forgotten world in the hope that somehow some way there are still mammoths to be found at the end of it. Be prepared to laugh, cry and reconsider your terrible life choices in this one of a kind classic adventure game.
