Released in 1999 as the lead single from XTRMNTR, “Swastika Eyes” marked one of the most radical reinventions in Primal Scream’s career.
Leaving behind much of the psychedelic rock and dance language of earlier records, the track pushed into a harsher collision of electronic rock, techno and industrial noise. Jagz Kooner and The Chemical Brothers each produced distinct versions, both reflecting the darker, more confrontational direction of XTRMNTR at the turn of the millennium.
Despite its deliberately provocative title, “Swastika Eyes” was never about Nazism. Bobby Gillespie described the phrase as a metaphor for authoritarianism and an attack on the “new world order”, American foreign policy and the growing power of corporations and governments.
Militarism, political control and the abuse of power run throughout the song — and throughout XTRMNTR.
