Conceived as a complete listening experience, the record unfolds as a sequence of interconnected horror narratives shaped by grief, psychological unease, and quiet emotional collapse. Across nearly an hour of music, the album moves through stories of betrayal, isolation, obsession, and loss, guided by cinematic pacing and long-form progressive songwriting.
Created entirely by Koda, the Vancouver-based composer behind SWANWRITER, melodies of despair expands upon the musical world first introduced on the 2023 debut There is a darkness. Piano and acoustic instrumentation play a more central role throughout the album, allowing moments of fragile calm to exist alongside dense progressive metal arrangements and dissonant climaxes. Classical influences appear naturally within the compositions, woven into shifting song structures that evolve gradually rather than relying on repetition.
