An amazing gift for those who love to cook or who love to watch things grow. Go with options that are easy to maintain in small spaces, like chives, thyme, and sage. With enough time, each herb will eventually outgrow their can home and be ready for a new seedling in its place.
You Will Need:
3 empty steel food cans of same or varying sizes (just make sure they don’t have bpa lining)
Hammer & nail
Water-resistant paint (although you can buy more eco-friendly paints, we recommend using what you might already have first! Not into paint? Try decoupage or wrap the cans in fabric)
Paintbrushes, old sponges, or anything else you can think of to apply color
3 different types of seedling herb plants
Step 1: Peel the label off your empty food cans, making sure there’s no sticky residue left behind.
Step 2: Paint the cans as you see fit. If you have multiple colors, you can get creative by adding stripes, patterns, or labeling each can with the name of the herb that will go inside.
Step 3: Use the hammer and nail to pierce 3 to 6 drainage holes into the bottom of each can.
Step 4: Gently wiggle your seedling herbs as you remove them from their original containers and re-pot them into each can, using extra potting soil to fill in the extra space in the can.
Bonus Step: Ask your local nursery (or the wisdom of the internet) for each herb’s care instructions, then write them down on some repurposed paper and attach to each can.
