PoliceActivity | Suspect Stabs Woodbury Police Officer in The Neck During a Traffic Stop @PoliceActivity | Uploaded October 2024 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.

Woodbury, Connecticut — On Thursday, October 3, 2024, at approximately 1:24 p.m., Officer Tim Wright of the Woodbury Resident Trooper's Office observed a dark colored Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling on North Main St in Woodbury failing to properly display a registration plate. Officer Wright initiated his emergency lights and siren to effect a traffic stop for the observed violation, to which the operator of the vehicle complied and pulled off of North Main St into the driveway of an apartment complex. Once stopped, the operator of the vehicle had exited his vehicle and began to approach Officer Wright. As Officer Wright exited his patrol vehicle, it became apparent that the operator was verbally aggressive and refusing to comply with verbal commands.
A physical altercation ensued, during which the operator stabbed Officer Wright in the neck with a knife. As this was occurring, another Woodbury Officer, Officer John Covello, arrived on scene. The operator attempted to flee on foot, however Officer Covello was able to successfully deploy his Taser, take control of the suspect and place him in handcuffs. Officer Covello maintained visual contact and verbal control over the detained suspect while simultaneously attending to Officer Wright's injuries. As additional units arrived on scene, it became apparent that the response time for emergency medical personnel was unknown. Recognizing the immediate need for a higher level of medical care, Woodbury Resident Trooper Sergeant Matthew Costella transported Officer Wright to Waterbury Hospital to expedite emergency medical attention.
Officer Wright is in stable condition at this time and is expected to make a full recovery. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Tyler Wilmot of Woodbury, was transported to St. Mary's Hospital as a result of the Taser deployment under State Police custody. Wilmot was later discharged from St. Mary's and transported to Troop L- Litchfield for processing. Wilmot was processed and charged with the following violations: Failure to Display Registration Plate, Illegible License Plate, Operating a Motor Vehicle Without a License (subsequent offense), Interfering With an Officer/Resisting, Assault on a Public Safety Officer, Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder, Assault 1st Degree. Wilmot is being held on a $3,000,000 bond set by the Waterbury State's Attorney's Office.
