Two male suspects remain at large today following a pursuit November 12 2018 evening that started in the city and ended on Coressel Road in the county.
According to the Defiance Ohio Police Department, at 9:16 p.m., patrolmen were in the blocks of 1500-1800 North Clinton Street looking for a vehicle reportedly involved in a theft at JCPenney.
Mall security located the vehicle in the Walmart parking lot at 1804 N. Clinton St. and attempted to stop it.
Assistant Police Chief Lee Martinez reported that Defiance officers also observed the vehicle, which fled the scene at a high rate of speed onto North Clinton Street. The pursuit continued eastbound onto U.S. 24, with speeds reaching 100 mph. At that time, the pursuit was temporarily called off.
The vehicle reportedly turned left onto Banner School Road, went out of control and spun off the roadway. Law enforcement re-initiated the pursuit as the vehicle continued on. The vehicle drove several miles on various roads in the area, eventually turning onto Adams Ridge Road. As the vehicle crossed Coressel Road, it went out of control and struck a utility pole.
Martinez added that a male was observed fleeing the vehicle into a cornfield. There was another male alleged to be in the vehicle.
A Defiance County K9 responded to the scene. A search of the area was conducted, but the suspects were not located.
Assisting were the Defiance County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio Highway Patrol's Defiance post.
The incident remains under investigation.
