This video was a finalist for best short in the saxxies for 2013.
Thanks for all the support guys. When I had to get In the ambulance back on the 16th, I had basically given up expecting the video to go anywhere. So to make it as a finalist is quite a good outcome. A bit more info for the video, I put this whole thing together in two days , except sound work. I've started using a hybrid workflow of ipisoft mocap with conventional key frame animation, and the results are both spectacular, and super duper fast.
For those of you who have met some confusion in the story, the piece is a bit of. Metaphor told trough some rather straightforward presentation. Quite simply, the medic here is a bit of a rich snob filmmaker, with a prestigious career under his belt. When a couple of ruffians show up thinking they can start trouble and take a shortcut to fame, they momentarily gain the upper hand. However, the calm and collected medic proves to us, that cooler heads are crueler heads. After he succeeds in subduing the intruders, he gives them a harsh lesson about screwing with people that you don't understand. He invites some accomplices over, and treats scout and spy to a bit of true voyeurism, via the amusement of some clandestine gonzo film society
(General update) Zach here. Thanks for the well wishes. I appear to be out of danger , still in the thick of some rough stuff. You all should know how awesome mcvee and ogg are for getting this together. I have another saxxy entry which was not able to meet the deadline, but expect that to come out in the following few weeks maybe. I like it. It's kind of the opposite of this one, in that instead of being short and dark, it is instead long and kind of joyful. Here's hoping that I can soon show all you guys the many great things I've been working on lately.
Hey guys,
This is actually McVee uploading the saxxy entry on Zach's behalf. Unfortunately Zach is in hospital due to a internal rupture that required emergency surgery. He's been patched up and is stabilized now though. He's making a good recovery and I'm helping him out as much as possible.
This entry wasn't going to make it but i managed to finalize and render it out for him. I Didn't want it to miss the opportunity as it's a pretty great short.
Enjoy! And I think i can speak for everyone when I say we wish Zach the very best in his recovery.

TL:DR I had a hard drive failure and lost everything, so I am unable to finish this film. As is my custom, I am simply releasing the most finalized render I had for it. :( . details below.
The plot I had intended for this video was as follows. The idea was to have these three individual groups chasing the escape vehicle which is seen flying throughout many of the shots. They would be running around this harsh apocalyptic wasteland. As the varied groups chased the escape Vehicle, they would each take a different path and eventually end up within sight of the escape vehicles landing location. However, When the escape vehicle was preparing to land , it was going to be shot down by a fourth party. The three main parties, shown in the video, would each be dissappointed, seeing their ticket home go up in flames. I would pull out to reveal that by chasing this vehicle, all of the parties involved had unintentionally come together, and they would find that though the thing they wanted (escape) was now lost, They could still have something meaningful (a group, family, safety) by sticking together in order to survive. I had already re-worked much of the video to accommodate this end, but that footage was lost with my hard drive. Additionally I had some very specific plans with the audio mix to help communicate these ideas. Cest la vie.
you guys must be getting pretty angry at me for posting dead and unfinished projects so often, But this time I have a good excuse. On saturday I had a major hard drive failure and I lost my SFM drive along with my 4 current projects. Im still hopeful about being able to salvage two of the Projects, but this one is unfortunately dead. Again, this is a snapshot of a film half-finished, so Im sorry nothing makes sense or goes anywhere. I had some good stuff planned for this and hope to return to the style.
What happened? My main SFM drive had a mechanical failure which caused me to lose all the data on it. This has happened to me before but not in many years. I am not making efforts to recover the data. I know that is a troublesome road and will only make me more sad about losing data, I am instead choosing to see this as a starting over point. Many people in the SFM community like to back up their DMXs automatically to dropbox, I will be adopting this workflow and would reccommend others consider the same. More soon.
