For Christmas my husband’s gift to me was a subscription to my local independent bookstore’s surprise book box program. I got the email today that my first package was ready to be picked up and I couldn’t wait to get home and see what was inside!

My husband and I filled out a little reading survey about my reading likes and dislikes and I am thrilled with the delicious treats included and the book they chose for me! Maasai Mengiste was an author on my radar as part of my Reading Africa Challenge but I hadn’t picked up one of her books yet so this was a perfect match!

Set in the 1930s in Ethiopia at the time when Mussolini’s invading army clashed with the forces of Emperor Haile Selassie, “The Shadow King” promises to tell the story of “what it means to be a woman at war.”

Of all the African countries I have visited, Ethiopia remains one of my favourite experiences… I love the food, the fascinating history, and the beautiful ancient orthodox churches. It is high time I read a story set there too, and this book sounds like it meets so many of my interests: African lit, historical fiction, strong female characters, and war stories. I can’t wait to read this over the next month! I will do a full unboxing/reading vlog/book review video here at the end of February!
