This a very useful technique, both for rescues and changes of heart.
In this situation I ran out of colour of yarn whilst away from home. I only needed yarn for another 50 or 60 stitches in order to be able to carry on with the next band of colour. I substituted a brightly contrasting yarn and carried on. This yarn would then be replaced later, shown here.
If the problem row or round requires more than 5 replacement stitches, this method can be used, it is neater than simply duplicate stitching .
For example, to fix unfortunate colours in a completed project and to completely replace an island of intarsia.
