In a recent interview, Trenton chats with JP Kaine (vocals) and Blake Smith (drums) from rising Kentucky metalcore band Surfaced open up about their upcoming EP Where Angels Fear to Tread, dropping August 15 via 1126 Records. Known for their chaotic live energy and fearless approach to songwriting, Surfaced blends raw aggression, emotional depth, and hardcore roots into their heaviest and most personal release yet.
Formed in late 2021 in Louisville and Oldham County, Surfaced quickly carved out a spot in the heavy music scene with influences from Slipknot, Beartooth, and old-school hardcore. In the interview, JP and Blake share the band’s origin story — from meeting at local shows and work to crafting their sound without genre limits.
Where Angels Fear to Tread dives into deeply personal themes, channeling emotions like anger, anxiety, fear, and vulnerability. The band calls it “a concept record, but not fictional” — each track reflecting real struggles, panic attacks, and life’s darker moments. Fans got their first taste earlier this summer with two singles that set the tone for the EP’s intensity.
