How Guideposts Has Supported the Military for Over 60 Years
When Guideposts was founded in February 1945, World War II was upending the lives of soldiers and their families across the country. Founder Dr. Norman Vincent Peale built the organization's mission around reviving the power of faith — and Guideposts' Military Ministry was born to serve those who serve. Peale didn't just send materials from afar; he personally visited troops stationed in Vietnam to encourage them face to face.
That mission continues today through partnerships with military chaplains across every branch of the Armed Forces. Retired Army Chaplain Colonel Charles Howell, who once led the chaplain team at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, has handed out tens of thousands of Guideposts publications over 30 years — offering stories for healing of the spirit while doctors treated the body. Guideposts also reaches military families directly, from wives' groups overseas to a monthly partnership with Operation Gratitude, which includes 10,000 copies of the magazine in care packages sent to deployed service members every month.
Last year alone, Guideposts distributed more than 69,000 inspirational booklets, 1.4 million copies of Guideposts magazine, and 250,000+ personally signed greeting cards to active military, veterans, and rehabilitation centers nationwide.
The mission remains the same: to help our defenders and their families stay strong, hopeful, and reminded that they are never forgotten.
