On Superman and Lois season 1, episode 1, Clark final fight and we’re introduced to the new versions of Clark Kent. They all get into a fight. Superman fights his enemy in the sky high above. In the sky, Superman is stabbed with a kryptonite. Clark battle scene falls to the earth .
Clark gets alerted of another nuclear facility in danger, and this time he is met by The Stranger (Wolé Parks) and they begin to fight. After chasing him around, he stabs Superman with kryptonite.
Clark and Lois talk when he overhears an emergency at a nearby nuclear facility. He heads there. When he arrives he hears someone thinking, telling him directly that he cannot see through lead. They know who he is. Superman realizes this is why they are targeting these facilities.
Meanwhile, the man who is after Superman tells him he is from another world. Superman pushes through a wall and comes face to face with a man in a suit and helmet. The man shoots into the sky flying away. Clark follows.
Lois gets a call. She realizes Clark is in trouble. She speaks to him. He hears her voice. He pulls the krypton out of his chest, just seconds before almost crashing to the hood of a car.
All these problems are complicated by Clark’s larger mission, which has him getting called away by General Lane to deal with a mysterious masked super-being, determined to draw Superman into a fight to the death. These battles keep him away from home at the worst possible time in the lives of the boys, one or both of whom may be developing super-powers…
Specifically, I think Captain Luthor is a refugee from another planet that was destroyed when the multiverse collapsed in last year's five-hour crossover. Following the birth of Earth-Prime, which is where all of the Arrowverse shows take place now, several people from dead worlds wound up on this new planet, including a non-evil version of Kate Kane's sister Beth on Batwoman and several versions of Brainiac-5 on Supergirl. And so I think Captain Luthor is in the same boat, too. In fact, he hints as much during his fight with Superman in the premiere: "I know everything there is to know about the Last Son of Krypton. Where I come from, let's just say the two of us have history," says the Captain. "My world was destroyed, but somehow I managed to survive. I eventually arrived here and I learned you were here, too." If I'm correct, then this Captain Luthor reveal is probably the most overt reference to the larger shared universe in the premiere, which isn't nearly as Easter egg heavy as other Arrowverse pilots.
In Clark's voiceover, he worries that he might lose himself to the stress of it all before saying, "Under the torn fibres is a strong person forged like steel with the courage to fight for those we love." Let's just hope Superman has the strength to pull these fibres back together in future episodes and forge something new, something worth fighting for.
In Superman & Lois, that means adjusting the narrative focus. There are still supervillains on this show, and dynamic, special-effects-heavy fight scenes. But through the first two episodes, the overall vibe is less Action Comics and more This Is Us
