Supergirl out-of-the-theater reaction — DC Studios is back with a cosmic, emotional, and character-driven Supergirl story led by Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El.
In this video, I’m giving my immediate reaction for Supergirl, the new DC Studios film starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl. Directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira, the movie brings Kara into the new DCU with a much different energy than Superman. Warner Bros. and DC’s official site lists the movie for theaters on June 26, 2026.
What makes this version of Supergirl stand out is that Kara is not simply “Superman’s cousin.” She is angrier, more wounded, more reckless, and carrying a completely different kind of trauma. This is a cosmic DC story, but it is also a story about grief, survival, and figuring out what kind of hero you become after losing almost everything.
Milly Alcock is the heart of this movie.
She brings a rawness to Kara that makes her feel messy, human, and unpredictable. This is not a polished hero who has everything figured out. This is someone who has power, pain, attitude, and a deep emotional wound underneath all of it. That makes her journey feel fresh inside the DCU.
The film is inspired by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with Kara embarking on a cosmic mission alongside Ruthye, played by Eve Ridley, while also featuring Matthias Schoenaerts and Jason Momoa as Lobo. Reuters describes the movie’s story as Kara joining Ruthye on a mission for justice after Ruthye’s family is murdered, with Krypto also playing into the adventure.
And honestly, that cosmic adventure angle is what makes this feel so different from a standard superhero origin story even if I personally feel that this movie is a BIT disappointing.
