This Super Nintendo commercial from 1991 takes me right back to one of the biggest console launches ever. Nintendo bundled Super Mario World directly with the SNES here in North America, so that game became the very first Mario experience for millions of people picking up the console for the first time.
Alongside Mario World, the launch lineup also included F-Zero and Pilotwings, both picked specifically to show off the SNES's new Mode 7 graphics, which let games fake 3D style rotation and scaling that nobody had really seen on a home console before. Mario World ended up sweeping five categories at the 1991 Nintendo Power Awards, including Best Overall Super NES Game, which tells you just how big of a splash this launch made. This was also happening right in the middle of the console wars with Sega's Genesis already two years into the market, so Nintendo needed this launch to hit hard, and it clearly did.
