This is my latest PB on this category performed on the 14th of June. It uses the rightful timing method of starting the time on the last screen before the game actually begins. Meaning that my older time on Deertier was a 6:07 and this run beats it by 5 seconds.
It uses a small handful of much improved strats:
- A more optimal farm in Green Brinstar that has just one stoppage during the fall instead of two.
- Credit goes to Smokey for this. Running into the pink door and shooting the missiles as fast as possible is faster than holding back and getting a running start through the door. It looks sloppy but I was very surprised to find it's as much as 20 frames faster.
- Main Plaza - Early shot + jump over the pipe to collect the drop in mid flight. This is a strat I've known for a long while and wanted to use in the old 6:09 (6:07) but chickened out. It's really not that hard to do, however I partially messed it up here by clipping the pipe on the way down.
- This is a strat that Reeve found earlier this month. I believe Zoast coincidentally found it himself shortly after: At the top pipe in Main Plaza you shoot first to kill the bug and then coincide the collection of the missile drop with a shot for the pink door, thus collecting the drop instantly after firing and therefore not needing to backtrack for it. It's a great strat because it means you don't have to shoot the hunter in the next room with the pea shooter. By far the fastest strategy here.
- Sticking to the left side ledge during round 2 of the SS fight. Twocat did this in his 6:09 (6:07). It's much better than allowing samus to fall in the center of the room. It's easily done by creating drops above and to the right of samus so you don't have to move too far out into the room to refill what you need.
I'm not happy with this run at all since i made a stupid mistake at the top of the shaft costing me at least a second. All the other minor mistakes add up to the other 1 second which put me 2.x seconds above the optimal 'perfect' run which is 5:59 and most likely a bit under. At this stage this category is a very frustrating one, since not only can you not make a mistake, but you need perfect RNG too which is fairly uncommon. I would like to improve it eventually to get the 5:59 but I'm not in any rush.
I have done a savestate run of this category with all the latest strats which gets a final time of 5:56. This could be considered perfect but would be next to impossible. Here it is if you want to see it. Use Snes9x 1.52 m2k2.taigaforum.com/attachment/2S74OwnFQMYGw3xka4ptcmO%2FJYI
