They have appeared throughout games in the Mario franchise and although their appearance remains largely the same, their functions differ depending upon the game being played. For example, in Super Mario Bros., if a Koopa Troopa is seen wearing a Green Shell, that means that it will not turn around if it reaches a cliff, and will instead walk straight into it. In Super Mario World Green Koopa Shells do not give Yoshis who eat them any additional abilities, unlike the other shells.
