So, all of this started when I watched a video where a dude was talking about very rare Mario games, he talked about a commodore non-bootlegged Mario game that was made by Hudson software.
The game I'm playing is a hack that tries to replicate this weird edition the most accurately possible.
This hack based on the commodore also highlights the problems of the very first Mario game on NES.
First: The momentum. The level design designed for the official game is not favourable of the Mario game on NES, in fact Mario has very little running momentum, when I tried to run at 13:32 to gain speed and jump higher, you could notice that Mario fell like a rock into the hole.
The enemy placement in the special edition is such an ass. It takes Mario some time to jump and land and right infront of you, a Goomba that fell from a pipe hits you. If any human being can react fast enough to dodge this type of nonsense, don't hesitate to tell me.
The special edition has a pretty unique level design that I adore (except the enemy placement) and the game is extremely generous when it comes to powerups. There can be up to 4 powerups per level, whilst the official game generally only had 1 powerup and more rarely 2 powerups.
The warp pipes are missing, finally.
Also, as you can see, I got fucked pretty hard in the video, but it's mostly because of cheap things (even cheaper than hammer bros) like the enemy placement or the constant lag of my emulator (example: 4:42), the emulator, for some unknown reasons, was very irrespondive. I hit the jump button at 22:28 and instead of jumping Mario ran into the hole, this shit happened 3 fucking times in the entire video. Also at some point in the video, the sprite of the game start to flicker like crazy (anyways it didn't bother me that much).
Pro tip:(I really need a new NES emulator).
I will however admit that I really died stupidly at 0:32 it was a pretty bad start.
If you want to learn more about Super Mario Bros Special, then I suggest you to look it up by yourself.
On my own, I will get another emulator and I will try to beat the "hack based on a real game". Fair use notice:
