After being unproductive for most of March, I finally recorded something! Life has been busy lately...
I would have had this video out last week, but I REALLY struggled with the vocal parts. I recorded a few takes, hated them, recorded more, hated those, etc. for days then finally decided to use the first ones I recorded, haha. For some reason, it was really difficult for me to get a good take. Perhaps I should have transposed it to a different key.
For one thing, I notice that I have a really hard time with the actual recording process, especially when singing. I'm not sure if it's just nerves or what, but my voice loses most of its tone/character/vibrato/warmth/everything when I record it through my current setup.
This cover along with my other lyric covers will hopefully be getting re-recorded later this year in an actual studio if I can afford it. My recording setup is horrible and, frankly, I really have no idea what I'm doing.
Regarding the lyrics; I thought it would be funny to write them as if Mario were singing the lullaby to the piranha plant in order to lull it to sleep so he could sneak by.
I've got 4 videos planned for next month. One of which is going to be a "proper" treatment of my "Peaceful Days" cover from Chrono Trigger!

Have you played Stardew Valley yet? Ive put a ton of hours into it since release and I have to say that its my favorite game of the year so far. Its a farming game, much like Harvest Moon. I cant say that Im a huge fan of Harvest Moon, but I like to play those games every now and then. Stardew Valley takes all of the best ideas from the Harvest Moon series and improves on them all. Its the farming game that Ive always wanted!
Id been keeping an eye on the development of this game for about 3 years leading up to its release and am elated to finally play it. Its pretty much exceeded all my expectations and ConcernedApe did a fantastic job on it, which is super impressive considering he was the sole developer. If you havent played it, please check it out!
So Id been combing the soundtrack while playing the game, looking for something to cover. Most the of tracks are more on the ambient side which dont align real well with my style of covers. However, there were a few that jumped out at me.
With this one, I had to decided whether or not I was going to do a solo guitar arrangement or a fully-instrumented one. I decided to go with the solo guitar version because I like a good challenge, haha. I feel like it works well as a peaceful, melancholic piece of guitar music. Id put the difficulty level at around 6/10 with Fallen Down being 10/10. I made one little flub that I patched over. See if you can find it ; )
Ive been experimenting a little bit with trying to get a better tone out of my guitar when recording. I recently learned that its bad practice to aim the the mic straight at the sound hole of the guitar which explains why theres so much rampant low-end when I record. I pointed the mic at the fret board which produces a much broader sound and takes some of the sting out of the bass. I still need to try some more things, but I think Im getting closer to the quality that I want.
One big issue that Im having is a ground loop thats going on with my recording rig. Its not too grating, but you can definitely hear it if you listen closely. Anybody have any tips for treating this issue? Ive tried a few different things, but I cant seem to get rid of it.
Finally, Im almost over being sick and should be able to sing again soon. Im hoping to finish up this Zelda lyric cover thats been on hold since mid-February by the end of this month or at least in early April. Wish me luck!
