The Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornet has become a cornerstone of Australia’s air combat capability. Originally acquired as a stop-gap between the retirement of the F-111 and the arrival of the F-35, the Super Hornet quickly proved itself far more than an interim measure.
Entering RAAF service in 2010, the twin-seat multirole fighters of No. 1 and No. 6 Squadrons provided a powerful blend of precision strike, fleet defence, and interoperability with allies. They saw combat over Iraq and Syria during Operation Okra, where they delivered hundreds of precision-guided munitions with exceptional mission success rates. Beyond combat, the Super Hornet has been central to joint exercises across the Asia-Pacific, from Talisman Sabre to Red Flag, strengthening ties with regional and global partners.
With advanced radar, electronic warfare integration, and the reliability of the F414 engines, the aircraft remains a formidable platform in RAAF service. More than just a bridge to the F-35, the Super Hornet has evolved into a dependable mainstay of Australia’s modern air power
