If you need to collect a drop from the third owl the charge shot is needed to freeze the last owl, but otherwise it isn't needed. A missile can be used to kill the last owl if they are being stupid and still don't drop super missiles. I'm not sure if it's faster than the old strategy or not, but it saves ammo if going by the top route. I also find that it's more consistent, but that's just me.
