I bought this game the day it came out, and I was so excited to play it. Horror has always been one of my favorite genres, the game was developed by Silicon Knights (who I had come to adore after playing their Dos game Dark Legions), and Eternal Darkness was the first M-rated game ever published by Nintendo.
And I wasnt left disappointed. Kicking off with the reading of a Poe quote and the Nintendo logo turning blood red, you knew from the start that you were in for something special.
The game follows Alex Roivas, a young woman whose grandfather has just been found murdered in the library of her familys ancestral home in Rhode Island. The police havent been able to make any headway in their investigation, and when Alex begins looking into her grandfathers personal business, she quickly finds herself confronted by the stuff nightmares are made of.
Eternal Darkness is split into chapters, each taking place at a different point in history, told from the perspective of someone who played a pivotal role in a battle that has been waged over the course of millennia, and the game develops all of them well enough to evoke a sense of empathy and dread as you guide them to their grisly ends. The story plays out in just a few key locations, but the circumstances in which you revisit them give each scenario its own unique - and often thoroughly unnerving - vibe that contributes color and weight to the overarching story.
The excellent writing mimics the literary pretensions of 19th century gothic horror novels without coming across as hokey, the mindf**k moments are consistently unnerving, the visuals and sound design strike the perfect tone to keep you on edge the entire time, and it all still feels remarkably fresh and modern for a game thats now over twenty years old. Its one of the best horror games Ive played, and its one of my favorite titles in the GameCube library.
Unfortunately, it remains a GC exclusive to this day, which begs the question: why havent you ever seen fit to rerelease this on a more contemporary platform, Nintendo?
(I recorded a playthrough of the game seven years ago, and with that video, I promised a follow-up that would show the different paths through the game and the true ending. For reasons I can no longer recall, I never followed through on that promise. It felt wrong to leave things like that, so this new playthrough is a peace offering. My apologies to anyone who watched that first video and got left hanging.)

As demonstrated by Ys Books I & II for the TurboGrafx (https://youtu.be/KrH2uvC-zog), Ys I and Ys II are essentially two halves of the same game, but unless you had a TurboGrafx-CD setup, chances are that you never got a chance to play Ys II in its own time. Before 2009 when its 3D remake was released on the Nintendo DS, the TGCD version was the only official way to play it in English. Japan, however, did get a contemporary console release in the form of Victors 1990 Famicom adaptation, which, like the FC version of the first game (https://youtu.be/D1oD7m8wjSg), was created by Advance Communication.
Though its not a 1:1 copy, Ys II for the Famicom does a better overall job of recreating the PC88 original than the first port did. Some map layouts were simplified and minor bits of dialog were cut, but the game holds to the originals blueprint and doesnt invent any new puzzles or plot scenarios, and they even managed to include a cut-down version of the animated intro sequence.
The gameplay is closer, too, though some of the changes made to the bump combat mechanics make Ys II way too easy to blow through. Now, so long as Adol is strong enough, he can defeat any enemy without taking damage by simply walking in place against a wall tile. As a result, combat magic and armor upgrades are largely rendered superfluous.
If you want to experience the story of Ys II without the challenge, the Famicom version delivers a respectable way to do just that. If you enjoy being made to work for the ending, though, youre better off looking elsewhere.
