This week on Sunday Longplay, it's a new twist on an old classic! Welcome to Zelda 2: The Adventure of Mario!
This is far more than just a player sprite hack like the ones I've been using in the Zelda 2 Randomizer! This hack comes with completely overhauled gameplay mechanics to go with Mario's playstyle in his original game!
For starters, he can run faster, jump higher, break blocks in the air from underneath, and stomp enemies just like in Super Mario Bros. With this in mind, some of the spells and mechanics had to be changed. For example, since Mario already has the higher jumps granted by the Jump spell by default, that spell was changed to "Tanooki", which gives Mario a tail attack, the ability to slow his fall, and the ability to transform into a statue, just like the Tanooki suit in Super Mario Bros. 3. And since Mario already has the Downstab's ability with his enemy-stomping ability, that powerup was changed to upgrade his already-existing ability to pierce shields. As for the Upstab, Mario can't hit enemies by jumping into them, but he can break blocks by jumping into them while in Super form, and the Upstab powerup allows him to emit damaging shockwaves akin to the Thunder spell by doing so.
