The #LetsFaceItPeriod campaign brought together Kiran Gandhi and Rupi Kaur, two activists and artists, to meet for the first time and create a unique composition meant to empower women around the world that was recorded at DMNDR Studios in NYC. The video for "Sun Spills" was officially released in NYC on March 30th, 2016.
The #Let’sFaceItPeriod social media campaign aims to start an open and global dialogue on menstruation, to break taboos and stigmas that exist worldwide, and to raise funds to support menstrual health programs in Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan and the US to keep girls in school. The launch event of the Let’s Face It. Period. Campaign took place at the Centre for Social Innovation in New York City on September 1st 2015.
The campaign involved men and women, boys and girls taking a photograph of them-selves wearing red lipstick and posting it on social media with the hashtags #LetsFaceItPeriod #RedlipstickChallenge to show their support and donate to the campaign by spreading the message worldwide. Furthermore, artists and performers are collaborating with successful results to promote the mission and vision of the campaign.
The first collaboration between Rupi and Kiran, amongst many others, will support the #LetsFaceItPeriod campaign by allocating all benefits to the campaign. The #LetsFaceItPeriod campaign will be supporting four organizations that work in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Sudan, (Huru International, Girls Health Ed, Femme International and Stand4Education). Through these projects, we will provide 23,000 girls with access to sustainable and reusable Menstraul Hygiene Management (MHM) products, including training on Sexual Reproductive Health and women’s rights.
