This video was originally made for our PATREON community, June 2024. Part 2 is available to watch now at our PATREON site.

The first part of a two part video tour around our new market garden that we planted with mixed berries earlier this year (2024). This micro berry farm has been designed as a food forest, incorporating many layers of edible, medicinal and useful tree, shrub and herb species with the idea being that the garden will provide produce for a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) scheme....or should it be CSFF - Community Supported Food Forest?!

In part 1 we look at the currant patch - Black, red, white and pink currants, as well as a row of Jostaberries.
We look at how we sheet mulched the rows, what materials we used and also at the other layers in the system - the canopy layer (top fruit like apples and cherries), the shrub layer (our currants), the herbaceous layer (comfrey) and the ground cover layer ( oregano and lemon balm). We also look at how annuals (in this case potatoes) have been grown in the pathways.

We compare the berries that have been mulched with wood chip versus the beds that were not mulched and look at the how the first stage of ecological succession has been expressed.

Part 2 is available to watch over at our PATREON site (see below link)

About Tap o' Noth Farm:
Hi, we're James and Rosa! Welcome to Tap o' Noth Farm, an 8 acre permaculture designed food forest farm/homestead in Aberdeenshire, NE Scotland. We practice home scale to small farm scale agroforestry and regenerative agriculture methods to produce organic fruit and vegetables, raise dairy cows and goats for all our raw milk needs, geese to graze our silvopasture and coppice systems and laying hens, moved around in a Chickshaw, for an abundance of eggs.
Our videos aren't 'how to's' - more videos to give a glimpse into our lifestyle and hopefully inspire you to bring aspects of what you see into your own life.

FOOD FOREST BERRIES
2024 sees work begin in establishing a small scale, permaculture designed family soft fruit enterprise that will rub shoulders with our other on-farm businesses. We aren't trying to compete with or replicate the large soft fruit commercial farms that are common place here in Scotland and around the world but showcase a small scale, ecologically diverse model that will work with our family farm's values and needs both economically and environmentally. Our sales will be direct to the consumer, working with our local community via a Community Supported Agriculture model (CSA), either through weekly fruit shares or by offering a pick your own/U pick. The berries grown in the market garden will add to the top fruit - apples and plums - that we have already been growing in food forest systems for nearly a decade.

HEDGE + FURROW'S OFF-GRID SHEPHERDS HUT
