This Summer Forum program features Candice Hasenyager, Director of Utah's Division of Water Resources, speaking on the importance of Great Salt Lake, the challenges it faces, and the state's efforts and initiatives to restore lake levels and improve water management.
Great Salt Lake is vital to Utah's economy, wildlife, and environment, contributing $1.3 billion and 7,000 jobs annually and supporting 10 million migratory birds. The lake's water level has seen significant declines, hitting record lows in recent years due to reduced inflows. This impacts wildlife habitats and air quality due to dust from the exposed lakebed. The state is now investing substantial funds in water conservation programs, agricultural optimization, and projects like secondary water metering. These efforts aim to restore lake levels and improve water management.
Candice Hasenyager, Director of the Utah Division of Water Resources, has worked on water resources and planning projects since 2007. She has been involved in multiple Utah Water Task Force workgroups, the Great Salt Lake Strike Team, water resources planning, surface water modeling, hydrology studies, and municipal water demand projections. Candice feels strongly about helping find balanced solutions to ensure Utah families have a reliable water supply, that agriculture and businesses can be successful, and that the environment can prosper. She graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Civil Engineering.
