Suikoden - Woven Web of the Centuries (Genso Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki) is a Japanese released ONLY Jrpg and a spin-off of the Suikoden main series,. It was released in 2012 and was the 14th release in the entire franchise. It was Developed and Published by Konami, the Fan-Translation was released in 2021 by Twisted Phoenix Game Translation.
STORY: 20/20
Monsters appear every one hundred years, setting their sights on the destruction of human kind, many heroes are made during this time of hardship, as are many villains. Heroes stand and rise up against the hordes of monsters every one hundred years, some become heroes, and some become legends. This is the story of a descendent of one said legend, can he hold back the hordes of invading monsters and save the world? or will he fail in his journey and doom the planet and the people that call it their home.
GRAPHICS: 18/20
Each character is unique and their character art is really well drawn. Spells and skills all look great too with a massive library of both to use or learn. Menu designs and pictures used for background art are all nicely drawn. Models for characters are nice BUT there are some times you can see faults within the models when they move or screen tearing, and little things kinda glitch-flashing. The world map is nicely done but some area art looks a little dodgy now but that's just probably due to screen enlarging? wrong graphical settings? or something.
SOUND: 18/20
The game's music is really great.. is it Suikoden 1 & 2 level.. ? probably not in in my eyes but I have to say the whole Suikoden series music OSTs are usually great any hows so I wouldn't have expected any less for this game. The sound effects are plenty and really sound great also. Did I mention that the game is entirely voice acted too? well it is.. I was super shocked to hear this, especially for a PSP game, more shocked though that the many different voices for characters that's present. I have noticed slowdowns in voice dialogue, but this happens very rarely and could probably be the settings on the system I use. I was expecting the sound not to be so great sounding due to the handheld system but it does an extremely great job all around, even the chat sounds great and you can clearly make out what's being said.
GAMEPLAY: 18/20
The game plays very much like a traditional Jrpg but it heavily focuses on story also. This game brings back the '108 Stars' collection but gathering all 108 characters isn't necessary to finish the game, some you will get throughout the story.. others you'll have to find. The game's world travel is more of a map that you enter into areas, so it's pretty much menu based until you explore small areas for battles and such. Learning skills sometimes comes with just levelling up but some skills can be learned between two people where you assign one as the master and the other as the pupil, after a few fights the pupil will learn the shared masters skill permanently. There's also a real cool time travel element in the game where you can travel back 100 years to visit people in the past to learn skills and stuff, you even travel back as far as 200 years. I'm not a massive fan of menu based exploration throughout the world map or in towns.. I prefer to explore myself but some how it works for this game and I didn't mind it one bit.. also I took into account the limitations of the PSP for the time. With the massive amount of playable characters in this game you can play the game over and over and never have the same battle experiences for a long time by mixing up the team so because of this the replay value is extremely high.
TRANSLATION: 20/20
This translation patch is really a work of art, though the game's voice acting is entirely Japanese the game is fully English subtitled with those scenes, which is highly impressive. I've not come across any issues or graphical problems with the patch so far so it's perfect in my eyes.
OVER ALL: 94/100
If you're a fan of the Suikoden series then I recommend you get and play this one right now, even if you haven't played the series before go and try them, they are such a great Jrpg series over all. Do I recommend it now? HELL YEAH!
