At a time when only men had access to public life and a woman’s place was decidedly in the home, it’s hard to imagine that there were men who supported women’s right to vote. But there were. Key influential figures took sides with the suffragettes and thousands of men joined demonstrations, marches and parades. It’s rarely mentioned, but there they are, in the photos and footage of the day. Indeed, Sylvia Pankhurst understood that the advantages afforded men were minimal compared to the strength and power of fighting together, for universal suffrage and a better life for all.
