Move over famous duos, the ultimate power couple of the women’s rights movement was Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. Their decades-long partnership helped build the foundation of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States.
In 1848, Stanton made a bold move at the Seneca Falls Convention, calling for women’s right to vote and writing the Declaration of Sentiments, a reimagining of the Declaration of Independence that challenged the ways men denied women their rights.Stanton brought the radical ideas, while Anthony became the relentless organizer who turned those ideas into a national political movement. Though neither lived to see the 19th Amendment, their partnership made women’s suffrage in America possible.
