Anyone who has been married for any length of time knows that suffering is a major feature of married life, just as it is a major feature of all human life.
Suffering is normal. Indeed, it is ultimately a great gift; and if we are to understand marriage, and more broadly human life itself, this demands our careful attention.
We must never forget that God does not want suffering for its own sake. But suffering is at the center of our faith. Why?
